MBFWJ | MARIANNE FASSLER

21 March 2014

Committed to reflecting a unique South African Identity, Marianne Fassler remained true to her eclectic aesthetic of marrying unexpected textiles. The collection was a fresh contemporary elucidation on the current  (Plaid/Tartan) trend through graphical elements that explore the becoming of South Africa. She contrasts tribal leopard skins with formal British influences , threading her signature emphasis with the use colour to celebrate the rainbow nation,  intense use of animal print, dye, sheer with glittery detailing.

Yesterday marked day 2 of the MBFWJ, where we saw South African design heavy weights such as David Tlale and Thula Sindi  ( Review on Thula Sindi to follow) showcased their A/W2013 collections. David Tlale held an exclusive showcase at the Legislature/city hall piazza  to offer
a collection that is a somewhat Deja vu from his latest offering at NYFW. A modern day unapologetic  Golden Prince and Princess in Asian Indian influences with metallics prints and details of gold and silver. Daring and bold brocade in tones of classic black and a touch OX blood. The static models created some bit of drama and opulence. The menswear however was something I haven't seen before. Here are some of my favs.

#MBFWJ | Avant Apparel

8 March 2013

Fragile innocence meets dark twisted fantasies, Avant Apparel's A/W2013 collection draws influences from the film Black swan with an added dash of baroque. The  manipulation of sheer/lace gives  flow and  shape to create a feeling opulent romance in soft tones of white, creams and Gothic black. Simple line and embroidery also bring texture to the collection, This is by far my favirote collection from day one.

MBFWJ | David Tlale

10 March 2012

It was hectic thunder storms and heavy downpours at Hyde park last night, a somewhat response by the fashion Gods as David Tlale show started relatively on time, which was rather refreshing.

The King as he is known,  preached the gospel with a ready to wear A|W 2012 collection that is both daring and on trend.  I loved collection's use of  fabrication and patterns, from  lace to exotic  leather and from geometric shapes to my personal favorite hounds-tooth. The exploration of sequins, peplums and pussy bows gave the collection a more lady like feel.

An outstanding rich and warm collection that truly defines a South African winter.
